With the extensive usage of Mobile Money services in Cameroon,it was only a matter of time before we begin hearing of its massive adoption in different projects. For a while now, the WFP has been using cash transfers alongside food deliveries to provide assistance to people in need.As they seek to go beyond food assistance and getting the right response to different situations. In Turkey, for example refugees receive bank card top-ups.However,in the case of Cameroon the World Food Program uses Mobile Money.
This innovative approach aims at delivering assistance faster while giving the refugees cash to purchase the food they want. In 2016, cash-based transfers amounted to a total of US$ 880 million, up from US$680 million in 2015.And this seems to be of great help to refugees.
Abdoulaye Amina,a refugee from the Central African Republic says:
“I am happy because I can now eat what I like and not what they give me.With the money in my telephone,I can buy spaghetti, milk, sardines. It’s a good thing.I can even buy meat”
Another outcome of the fact that the World Food Program uses Mobile Money services is that every household gets a mobile phone and Sim card.Through these ,they can receive their monthly allowances and engage in other commercial activities among themselves.
